also the registry key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\Instance Names is
locked and can not be opened.
After a reboot the key is now readable and the 2005 instance can be
connected to without these messages.
But after a while it does it again.
does anyone have any idea what is going wrong?Hi
My guess is that you have some group policy or Anti-virus/ISD system that is
locking down this registry key.

Error during Instance Install
server cluster. As I go to install I end up getting a "An error occured
while creating virtual server resources for clustering. The system cannot
find the file specified."
I've gone through KB 815431 and made sure the named piped alias is
configured properly and it appears to be working correctly. Let me know if
anyone has any ideas. Here's my sqlstp.log up to the point of the error.

I have logged onto each machine previous with the install account. As for
the accounts. The install account I'm using is the Domain Admin account, so
that should be alright. Also, the network accounts I'm using for both the
SQLService and the Cluster service are in the node's Local Admins group.
On all the nodes the TEMP and TMP variables for the Install account is
listed as %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temp. For the system it's
%SystemRoot%\TEMP
I changed them all to %SystemRoot%\TEMP (Replaced %systemroot% with the
actual path name as well.)
Still got the error message right after it tries to create the cluster
resources.
Now previously I had an install of SQL installed on these nodes that were
SP'd up to 3a. Could that be causing any of the issues?

Not sure how I can dig out any files, at this point a full re-install may be
in order.

Maybe on one node you logged on locally before, and the other not. You might
have differences. e.g.:
Node A
Administrator
Administrator.domain
Node B
Administrator
The profile-directory for the account you are using has to be the same on
both nodes. It's kind of tricky ...

Error creating login - Incorrect syntax near 'LOGIN'.
instance by the sounds of it. What's the version of the SQL instance
(run "SELECT SERVERPROPERTY('ProductVersion')")?
CREATE LOGIN is new to the SQL 2005 dialect of T-SQL. To add new logins
to a SQL 2000 instance, regardless of which SQL client tool you use, you
need to use sp_addlogin or sp_grantlogin (depending on whether it's a
standard SQL login or a trusted login we're talking about). I think the
GUI in Management Studio ought to take care of this automatically (ie.
use different commands depending on the server version) but if you want
to use T-SQL yourself then you need to write the correct statements for
the SQL version the server is running.

the sql server mgmnt studio, I get this error.
Msg 170, Level 15, State 1, Line 1

Thanks for helping out.
Esha|||Yeah, you're trying to run a "CREATE LOGIN" statement on a SQL 2000
instance by the sounds of it.

Error copying databases in SQL Server 2005
I am trying to copy a database from one instance of SQLServer 2005 to another instance of SQLServer 2005 using the SQL Server Management Studio Copy Database Wizard. The source database is a continuously updatable database, while the destination database is used for reporting purposes.
When the wizard tries to create a SSIS package (as part of Copy Database), I get the following error:

Hi
Copy database wizard is similar to EXPORT/IMPORT wizard of SQL Server 2000. There are new features in SQL Server 2005 for your scenario. You can use Database Mirroring, create a Snapshot on mirrored database for viewing data and can use for reporting services.|||Hi Jason,
This was a known problem in the past that should be working fine with the next CTP release. Right now, your best bet is to detach the database, copy to the destination, and then reattach it. You'll then need to copy recreate your logins at the destination to match with your users.
Thank you,

It is hard to say what went wrong from your info. You can check how to
connect to SQL Server at
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-gb/library/ms190944.aspx. You can check
different connection string, including ODBS connection strings, at

Error connection to MSDE
I have the Windows 2003 Server in my company and the MSDE SP3 install with
an instance for a program. But the program can't access the database, I have
tried to create a new data source to SQL Server in ODBC and it tells me SQL
Server Error: 11004 (Connection failed) and SQL Server Error: 6 (Specified
SQL server not found).
The MSDE is running with the name "SERVER\INSTANCE". I have enabled the
protocols in SVRNETCN.
Does anyone know what to do?
Thanks
Hi,
From the SQL server MSDE installed machine can you try to connect to SQL
server using both authentication using OSQL.
OSQL -Sservername -Usa -Ppassword
The aove command is suppose to go to a SQL Prompt. If it does then your SQL
server is working fine.If it is not look into sql serevr logs and find the
rason why sql server is down.
If your first stpe passed then, From command prompt execute a PING from your
client PC to MSDE server.
If it fail "Request time out" then it is a network issue.
Thanks

|||By default only shared memory is enabled when you install MSDE. If the
connection is being made from a remote machine or uisng TCP/IP or named
pipes to connect locally the connection will fail. You can use svrnetcn.exe
(SQL Server Network Utiltiy) to enable TCP/IP and/or named pipes.

Error Connecting To SQL 2005 through Webservice using SQL Authentication
Running a SQL 2005 Database under a Default instance. i.e. (SERVERNAME) and not (SERVERNAME/SQL2005)
I have a SQL Login sa password.
When I connect to SQL 2005 from anywhere other then the webservice it works fine.
In my webservice i am using System.Data.SqlClient.
SqlConnection, SqlCommand, SqlDataAdapter are being used to called a stored procedure and return the data into a System.Data.DataSet.
I get the following error when calling DataAdapter.Fill(dataSet);
{"TCP Provider: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host.\r\n\r\nLogin failed for user 'sa'."}
I have no resolutions as of yet. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Did you mean you can connect to the SQL2005 from anywhere with 'sa' login, except webservice? You can check the status of 'sa' login in management studio under Security->Logins, also make sure the Authentication Mode is SQL Server and Windows.|||I have checked the status of the login for user "sa" and it has access rights and grant levels to everything it needs to.
I have also created a new account specifically for that database which does not work either. Same error.
And yes my SQL 2005 Instance is configured to use both SQL Authentication and Windows Authentication. (Mixed Mode).
Any Ideas?

Any ideas or hints to allow remote connections to a SQL 2000 server?
The hint would be simple: a bit more study on SQL Server configuration. Look
into these:
1. Does the SQL Server instance allow remote connection (from other
computer?)
2. Does the SQL Server use SQL Server security - mixed security mode -
(using username/password in connectionString)?
If you can clearly answer these two questions, and still have problem, then
you have to show some code, especially the ConnectionString, and describe
more details.

|||Found out I had brackets around the server name. Now getting a different
error, this time:
(provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to
SQL Server)
SqlException (0x80131904): An error has occurred while establishing a
connection to the server.
I have checked that named pipes and TCP/IP are allowed. What should the
named pipes string look like for connecting to a local database?

error, this time:
(provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to
SQL Server)
SqlException (0x80131904): An error has occurred while establishing a
connection to the server.
I have checked that named pipes and TCP/IP are allowed. What should the
named pipes string look like for connecting to a local database?

Error connecting to SQL 2000 remotely
(there are two instances on this server) running on W2K.
However when we try and login (the username and password are correct) we
receive the following error:
Server Error in '/SimplyWeb' Application.

An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When
connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that
under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections.
